So i bought a ps1 model SCPH-1001 off craigslist and the dude gave me a 'Stealth III 7 Wire Modchip' with it but the chip itself was not pre-wired (just the chip itself). All the guides online are color coded and for pre-wired chips. This is what the chip looks like: (except the prongs aren't bent down). Also, i have found 2 or 3 guides for this chip and they all have different soldiering points. One guide here says to wire all 7 wires: but I have read and found a guide that says only 4 wires are needed for my model since stealth mode will not work for the 1001 model. Is this true?
INSTALLING A PLAYSTATION MOD CHIP or NEO KEY. How do I make my Game Enhancer/Game Shark work with a PSX Stealth Mod Chip? Open the lid. After 10 years of the original modchip design for the PSX machines which used the older PIC 12C508, we came across a bunch of un-modded new PS-One machines, and since we had the old source code for the PSX modchip, and the original design used the PIC 12C508 chip, which is hard or costly to get these days, and there is tons of the newer 12F629 chips around these days due to the Wii-mod.
How can i find out what wires go where on both the chip and on my model board? Another question: What wire will work? Or just a certain type??
Alexjames01 wrote:Thanks and i also sent him a PM. I originally was going to just have him install one for me but ended up getting this one with a modchip on the side so figured i'd give it a shot. I've never soldiered before so it might be a harder task than i imagined. Practice on old PCBs The tricky connection will be at the PS1 chip legs that is right on the board. Very easy to accidently connect two of the legs together. A pencil soldering iron helps, be sure you use Rosin Core solder.
Also tinning each wire with solder helps before soldering to the points on the PCB. Then you just reheat each solder coated wire onto its connection. The PSX model you stated does have FMV skipping issues. The 7000 series are a lot better, still have a parallel port and the Soundscope CD player. I found this guide and followed it (it also had the wire diagrams for the chip itself):. That is the 4-wire version (which according to them, 100x models only need).
I figured it had less room for mistakes so no harm trying it first. But when i turned on the ps1, the intro animation had no sound and the cd-rom spun non-stop (and was un-recognized as a game). I un-soldered everything and got the intro sound back and everything went back to working order (whew!). So back to square one. Tomorrow I am going to try the diagram above and see if that set up will work. Unless you know which HeX code was used to program the chip, you will have a hard time tracking down the correct diagrams.
Here is the diagrams for a 4-wire install for the 100x series I carry and Install Stealth Modchips for the 100x series All non-stealth modchips should work on the 100x series with only 4 wires Edit: go and buy 30 awg Kynar Solid Core Wire This wire is very thin and flexible, should cost around $5-$8 at radio shack Attachments pic12c508.jpg (8.52 KiB) Viewed 2453 times PSX1000.JPG (62.11 KiB) Viewed 2455 times.
